A birthday to remember
A couple of days ago we celebrated the 99th anniversary of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi’s birth at midday on equinox day - a moment of supreme balance totally befitting Her advent. Her extraordinary life touched so many aspects even beyond the spiritual achievements and mission. She was dear to Mahatma Gandhi and a frequent child visitor at his ashram. Just like the rest of Her immediate family she took a most active role in the fight for India’s independence despite the personal sufferings that it brought. Shri Mataji then witnessed from close the troubles surrounding the partition of India that interrupted Her medical studies in what is now Pakistan. She then married a man who was to become one of the most decorated civil servants the world has seen - Sir. C. P. Srivastava. She was a mother, grand- and great-grand-mother. She has advised countless people and endeavours in fields spanning art, medicine, architecture, sciences, etc.
But above all stands Her invaluable, unique and unprecedented capacity to trigger Kundalini awakening as well as counsel us in the finest details of our life and being. Shri Mataji took what appeared to be average humans, occasionally with very serious issues stemming from unfulfilled seeking, and transformed them in true spiritual beings that not only were able to fix themselves but manifested dynamic compassion and were able to share their achievements with anyone who was genuinely Interested. This was indeed unheard of and a source of wonder for even the few true saints and ascetics still living in the Himalayas !
One can only appreciate what one knows from experience and that for which we have the senses awakened. To enjoy a beautiful melody we need reasonable hearing and to appreciate its creator we need to have tried to create one ourselves. The greatness of Shri Mataji’s being and power of pure Love only starts revealing itself once we are truly established in our Realization, we come into steady balance and we are able to catalyze the same process for others. She always seemed to enjoy appearing in the most unassuming, sweet and comforting form. And she lost none of those atrributes as our capacities to feel and appreciate grew enough to perceive the extraordinary expanse of Her personality. Her birthday will forever remain as one of the greatest good news humanity has had, the Blossom Time heralding our spiritual Spring !
