The pure bond
There are few things as comforting as the confidence and trust between family members and the closest relationship is often between siblings. The brother-sister bond has been given a special role in all traditional cultures and for good reason. It exemplifies the ultimate ideal, pure relationship of both complete love and support as well as benevolent correction when needed. Of course this is also true for the relationships between parents and children but that is an “asymmetrical” situation, while the brother - sister relation is one of equality even if age can give it a certain flavour.
In the whole world, it is in the culture of India that the beautiful brother-sister bond is probably valued and celebrated the most as a core virtue of society. It is symbolized in a ceremonial string that the sister ties to the brother’s wrist. The string and the relationship it stands for transcend actual blood family relations. The bond extends to whoever brother the sister puts her faith into and sends a string during the special day that is celebrated every year and called as “Raksha Bandhan” - literally the bond (or shield) of protection.
This very old and truly unbreakable cultural paradigm has brought about some stunning historical references, starting from Alexander the Great onwards. That ancient story tells about and episode in Alexander’s conquering trip to Asia, specifically about him being defeated and imprisoned by one of the great kings of India - King Puru. Luckily, Alexander had previously married an Indian princess from another kingdom. To help things even more, the day of celebration of the brother -sister relationship was also near and his new wife took full advantage of it. She sent the symbolic “rakhi” string to King Puru who had to accept it. Upon revealing the identity of the sender, he immediately took his position as brother of the princess and thus brother-in-law of Alexander ! He released his prisoner and sent him with great honours and pomp back to his new sister’s palace. Upon being told of the reason for his extraordinary release and change in status in the eyes of King Puru, Alexander understood the magnificence of the Raksha Bandhan custom and the great truth forming its basis and eventually decided to retreat back to Greece.
The chakra governing our pure relationships is the Left Vishuddhi. As all chakras relate to different energies and material aspects of the physical world, this chakra does too - to the power of electricity. It also happens to be negatively impacted by guilt and a number of other issues that have their roots in the Left Channel. The strength coming from the pure brother-sister bond can help manage and resolve many of those issues which are extremely prevalent today and resulting in physical, emotional and psychological troubles. Maintaining the purity of relationships is a great way to have a clean and relaxed Left Channel, resulting in a self-sustaining positive mood and true enjoyment of life.
